Until recently, verification and stamping of weights and measures was handled almost entirely by Legal Metrology department offices. Long queues and limited capacity meant businesses often waited weeks for a stamp they were legally required to hold.
A Government Approved Test Centre, or GATC, is a private laboratory authorized by the government to carry out that same statutory verification. The authorization is granted under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and the centre must maintain reference standards traceable to the National Physical Laboratory.
In practice this means you can now walk into an approved private lab, have your scale or meter tested, and receive a legally valid verification stamp and certificate — with far shorter turnaround and the option of on-site service.
A GATC is not a shortcut. The fees are prescribed by government, the test procedures are the same, and the centre is audited. What changes is accessibility: more capacity, closer locations, and appointment-based service.
